Intestinal Parasite in Birds
Intestinal parasites can cause many problems in a bird’s stomach and intestines, but also affects the normal functions of other organs.
Symptoms and Types
Symptoms include:
- Malnutrition
- Diarrhea
- Faulty absorption of nutrients
- Weight loss
- Itching
- Feather plucking
- Excessive pecking of the skin
- Increased vocalization in the infected bird
An infected bird’s droppings will also look like popcorn. Baby birds will have poor feathering, call/cry unnecessarily, have increased hunger, not gain a normal amount of weight and, unfortunately, do not often survive the infection.
Causes
Infections are usually spread by consuming contaminated food. However, adult birds which are not infected can still carry the parasites.
Treatment
Antibiotics can be given which is added to the birds water or anti-parasitic medicine, which is administered orally.
Regular preventative treatments throughout the year with Worm Away, Ronex and Cocci Care will prevent worms and other parasites from effecting your birds.
Prevention is the Key!
Infections can often prevented by storing the bird food carefully and hygienically. Also keeping the bird place, cage and aviarys clean with a good disinfectant eg KD Powder
